NOVA's Weekend Report - March 27

NOVA A Side

NOVA Rugby hosted Raleigh Vipers at Gravelly Point in a home rematch. This was a big match for both teams as a bonus-point win meant NOVA would top the standings, while a win for Raleigh would secure sole possession of second place. The last time these two teams met, NOVA travelled to Raleigh and squeaked out a tie with a last second Penalty Kick by Anthony “Fish” Everson.

NOVA showed its dominance early in this contest when –at the three minute mark—outside center, Brian Mulloy, intercepted a Raleigh pass and finished with a try. The scoring would continue with wing, Anthony “Fish” Everson, scoring a hat trick on the day and converting five of NOVA’s nine tries.

Open-side flanker and Man of the Match, Brent Vickers, led NOVA’s shut down defense this week. After shutting out Richmond last week, NOVA’s defense only allowed two tries and constantly forced Raleigh turnovers. NOVA capitalized on the mistakes and turned it into a lopsided win.

Final Score NOVA A’s 55 – Raleigh 14

NOVA Tries: Mulloy, Everson (x3), Hagan (x2), Medlej, Rubio, Henderson

Conversions: Everson (x5)

NOVA prepares for another game-week, while sitting on top of MAC rankings. The boys will practice Monday, Tuesday and Thursday before hosting a determined Rocky Gorge team Saturday at Signal Hill Park, Manassas. This is a game you do not want to miss!

NOVA B Side

NOVA B’s travelled to Maryland and played Severn River this past Saturday. It was a true tale of two halves, as NOVA struggled to find its rhythm in the first half while giving up 17 points. However, the team believed that they could win, and they went out with renewed determination.

Once NOVA settled down and played their game, Mo Katz twice exploited holes in Severn River’s defense, while some nifty handwork by the team led to a third try by David Yarnell. New NOVA player Andrew Bringhurst kicked two conversions to put NOVA ahead of Severn River. Near the end, NOVA withstood a strong attack by Severn River, recovered the ball, and kicked into touch to end the game. This was a good showing by NOVA to mount a strong come-from-behind win against a playoff contending D3 side.

Final Score NOVA B’s 19 – Severn 17

NOVA B’s Tries: Katz (2), Yarnell

Conversions: Bringhurst (2)

NOVA B’s play Salisbury will be taking on Salisbury at 12:30 PM this Saturday at Signal Hill, Manassas (prior to the a side match).
